A Two Minute Play
There are three characters. One is a Josh young athletic man, another Harley the bartender, the third is Bert an older man sitting at the bar
The set is a bar with the whiskey bottles and glasses against the wall.
Harley is wiping the counter. Bert with an empty glass appears to be lost in some intoxicated dream. Josh enters and Harley smiles and nods. He retrieves a bottle of beer from under the counter, grabs a glass and sets it in front of the young man who seated himself at the far end of the bar.
Harley
as he sets the glass pour the beer in and set the bottle down.
That was quite a game you had there. Joanie was telling me about it. Bottom of the ninth, all tied up, and you got the hit. It can’t get any better than that.
Josh
Fast ball and I knew it was coming. One in, and that’s the game. Josh smiles and takes a drink.
Harley
Maybe you’ll make it to the tournament this year. He resumes wiping the counter.
Josh
Could be. He takes another drink. Puts he glass down. He looks at Bert, stares for a moment and then at Harley. You know, huh, you know I was thinking about something; sounds stupid for a guy like me to be thinking it. But I was thinking if a guy was gay and wanted to get married, could he do it in church…like if he was a good Catholic.
Harley
You mean if he wanted to marry another guy?
Josh
Yeah, that.
Harley
No, they wouldn’t
Josh
No?
Harley
They’re living in sin. Priest would never marry them. No
Josh
Funny, you’d think priest, nuns, monks are kind of gay people. You know what I mean? They don’t have kids. That’s like gay people. They don’t have kids either.
Harley
But they are there to be there for them. You know, nurses and teachers; people that people go to.
Josh
So it’s kind of like Catholics knew.
Harley
Knew what?
Josh
Why there are gay people.
Harley
Turns his head to think for a moment. Never thought that. Could be. You go back then, a family was eight, nine kids and they didn’t have what we got now. The old man had all he could do to put food on the table. Somebody gets sick, dies even; might have needed people to help out. But no, I never think about things like that. Why you want to know about gays getting married?
Josh
He takes a quick of his beer. Me? I just…well yeah, I …I got a friend who’s you know. He wants to get married.
Harley
Never in any church I know. Justice of the peace will do it.
Josh
That’s what I told him.
Harley
Speaking about marriage; you don’t have a girlfriend do you?
Josh
No.
Harley
Joanie asked. I told her no, I didn’t think so. All I see is you walking in with that young guy I had to card. I told her and she smiled. You know you ought to talk to her. You’d make a great looking couple.
Josh
Joanie, the waitress?
Harley
Yeah, she’ll be coming in for work pretty soon. I’ll say something to her, give you a head start. What you say?
Josh
Yeah…I guess…I ah
With this, Bert comes out of his dream, shakes his head a looks down at his empty glass.
Bert
Lifting the empty glass. How about another?
Harely
Coming up. He turns from Josh, takes Bert’s glass and takes a bottle of whiskey to make another drink. And as he is busy with mixing the drink, Josh glups down his beer, slides off the stool and exits.
